Uncle Vanya is one of the canonical plays of the famed writer A.P. Chekhov.
Initially published in 1989 and staged for the first time ten years later, at the Moscow Art Theatre, the Russian playwright’s text tells the story of retired professor Aleksandr Vladimirovich Serebryakov and his family.

The professor, in his second marriage, brings his much younger wife, Helena Andreyevna Serebryakova (Yelena), at his rural estate. This is the place where live Ivan Petrovich Voynitsky (Uncle Vanya), brother of professor’s late wife, who administrates the estate, Sofia Alexandrovna Serebryakova (Sonya), the professor’s daughter from the previous marriage and Maria Vasilyevna Voynitskaya, mother of professor’s late wife.

Another important character is Mikhail Lvovich Astrov, the local doctor and a frequent guest.

At the Serebyrakov estate apparently nothing really happens – one of Chekhovian world’s trademarks – but at the same time there is a great of drama happening in the characters’ minds and souls. Sonya is madly in love with Astrov but she doesn’t believe worthy of him, while Astrov and Vanya are in love with the charming Yelena. Each one of them live in their own world, trapped by boredom and insecurity. All the tribulations will finally reach the boiling point but failing to significantly alter the shapes of such a rigid universe.
