Written in 1932, „Take, Ianke and Cadâr” by Victor Ion Popa has passed the test of time and has become one of the most popular and staged plays from the interwar period. The story of the three store owners – a Romanian, a Jew and a Turk – whose tranquil monotony is being disturbed by a dilemma redefines the interethnical and, on a deeper level, the interhuman relationships. Considering the current background of global social tensions due to migration and the frequently tensed and politically charged relationships between ethnical minorities and the majority, „Take, Ianke and Cadâr” formulates questions and proposes actual answers in a humorous manner in which human weaknesses are being given an indulgent and ironical treatment and the possibilities of negociations through mutual understanding are stressed with a soft wisdom.
Victor Ion Popa’s play will delight the audience with its fresh charm and will provide a new direction of humanity in a society that way too often rushes to point fingers before attempting to understand other people’s position. Love will finally prevail? It remains to be discovered at the show presented by „Liviu Rebreanu” Company of the Târgu-Mureş National Theatre.
