We often ask ourselves how the story could continue after we read its last phrase: „…and they lived happily ever after“. That means that nothing happened to the characters? Their life was so happy that there is nothing else to tell about it? Was it dull? For a character the absence of any kind of adventure, of conflict means that it doesn’t exist any longer. I tried to wake Dănilă Prepeleac from the chasm of boredom in which he submerged after Ion Creangă left him happy ever after. Because it is hard to believe that the devil whom he had tricked just gave up and minded his business. Of course, the devil’s retribution could have taken many inventive forms. But we live in a society where law must prevail and the Devil is keen to make use of it. And the most natural way is to sue the one who tricked and harmed you. Thus the merry Dănilă finds himself in the middle of a trial. Man versus devil. Judges, witnesses, prosecutors, attorneys. Where is the truth? Who is guilty? Is justice capable and willing to fulfill its mission? So many questions.
Curious business. For any given solution someone will be unsatisfied, many will be outraged. We are used nowadays, maybe more often then anytime before, to judge everything that happens around us. To point fingers, to analyze in the strangest and most unexpected ways other people’s words, to accuse them and even to demand to have them forbidden to say anything any longer.
Or to write.
We still need stories about life? We are still allowed stories about life?
Because life is a story and needs to be told.
